African hydropower developer

Africa's rivers engineered for the grid.

An African hydropower developer, headquartered in Kigali. We take run-of-river projects from the first survey through to grid connection, and stay for the life of the plant.

What we do

One team, from first survey to grid connection.

We develop run-of-river hydropower in Africa, beginning in Rwanda. The same team handles the engineering, the permitting, the construction, and the years of operation that follow, so responsibility never changes hands.

How we work

A concrete headrace canal running beside a river
An intake weir and headworks on a mountain river

The works

Three structures, one river, no reservoir.

Run-of-river takes a share of the flow and gives it back downstream. That is why these schemes clear environmental review that storage projects cannot.

01

Intake

A weir and intake structure divert part of the flow. The river keeps running.

02

Headrace

A canal or tunnel carries the water along a gentle gradient to the forebay from a de-sanding structure.

03

Powerhouse

The penstock drops to the turbines, and the tailrace returns the water downstream.

The opportunity

Africa's hydropower does not need discovering. It needs developing.

The resource is not the constraint. The shortage is of developers who can carry a project through permitting and all the way to financial close.

African hydropower capacity, in gigawatts, on a shared scale from 0 to 120: 111.5 GW in the pipeline, of which 9.1 GW is under construction.

In the pipeline

111.5 GW

Identified, announced or approved across the continent

Under construction

9.1 GW

Everything else is held at approval or financing

90%+

of the continent's identified hydropower is waiting on approval or financing, not on the resource.

Our method

Every project moves through eight stages.

We run all of them ourselves, from the first visit to a river to the day the plant is handed to operations.
